Book Review: Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi

Release Date: January 8, 2012
Author: Veronica Rossi
Publisher: HarperTeen
Length: 352 pages

"It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.

Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?

In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable."

Characters: Aria and Perry's adventure continues as both look for "The Still Blue" to escape from the incredibly destructive Aether storms. Though Aria and Perry start off together in the beginning they soon part ways as Aria tries to find more about The Still Blue, leaving Perry to lead the Tides. Aria has grown much since she was cast out of Reverie and her Outsider side has fully bloomed. Perry has a large responsibility and has to make tough decisions that don't make him the most popular Blod Lord, but maybe the smartest.

Romance: At the end of Under the Never Sky, I though there was no way Perry and Aria love could be put "under siege" as the tagline for this installment says, but early on I saw that I was completely wrong. Though Aria is more of an Outsider now, she still has to walk the line between Dweller and Outsider, leaving her without a place she truly belongs. Once Perry and Aria part ways things begin to heat up as their loyalties to each other are tested.

World-Building: In this installment we get a better description for how the Aether sky looks, like an ocean of light rippling across the sky. We learn a bit more about how the Aether came to be and what happened when it came time to choose who got to migrate to pods and who had to stay on the outside and fend off the Aether. We also get to see more about Outsider tribes and get to go to another tribe that's nestled in a completely different environment than the Tides.

Predictability: I can't begin to explain how caught off guard I was with the various things that happen in this book. I would begin to think one thing would happen, but then I would be sucker punched with a twist that came completely out of left field leaving me in awe of what was happening. There were a couple things I could see coming, but not that much most things were such a twist of drama that I would sit there for a while soaking up what just happened. If Richelle Mead is the queen of cliffhanger then Veronica Rossi is the queen of dramatic twists.

Ending: This was probably my favorite part of the book because so many happy things happened and the drama kind of mellowed out for a bit, which I hope will just be the calm before the storm. Even though it wasn't a dramatic cliffhanger or a game changing twist it was a great set-up for the final installment in this breathtaking trilogy.

Overall, I can only give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It's full of action, drama, deceit, and moments that will make you cry and some that will make you squeal with joy.
