Book Review: Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

Release Date: February 5, 2013
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Publisher: HarperTeen
Length: 465 pages

"tick, tick, tick, tick, tick
it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life."

Protagonist: Juliette has, since the end of Shatter Me, reverted back to the shy timid person she was at the beginning of the previous installment. She is as anti-social as ever, only spending her time with her boyfriend Adam and does her best to "not be a problem." However, by doing that she puts herself in an even more dangerous situation because without making progress on controlling her Energy she puts many people at risk. Just when she gets at her most depressing, self-loathing point, someone is there to not only set her straight but to do it without coddling her or treating her as if she was fragile. This doesn't completely change her, but it's a start to not only a better Juliette, but a better installment in this series.

Romance: The romance in this installment definitely surprised me, even though there was a tad bit of cliched drama between Adam and Juliette it wasn't overused and was in fact used in a very compelling way. Also, the issue of Warner changed. In the previous installment I not only detested Warner, but I wouldn't even wish him on my worst enemy. In this installment however my thoughts about him changed as we learned a bit more about him. I haven't read Destroy Me yet, but I have a feeling that would have added a bit more while reading this. Now, I'm not saying that I'm "Team Warner" as that would have been too dramatic a change and would have probably cheapened the story for me, but I am saying that I don't completely detest him and if my worst enemy wanted him they could have him.

World-Building: There is a sufficient amount of world-building. We learn many things about bot the Reestablishment and the rebellion. We learn about the special powers or "Energies" that many of the characters have developed. We learn why some can touch Juliette while others are still hurt by her lethal touch. Also, for those who haven't read Destroy Me, such as myself, we meet Warner's father the ruler of sorts for the Reestablishment as well as learn about his (Warner's) family life. I loved the amount introduced in this installment and can't wait to see what else is revealed in the next.

Predictability: I was blown away by the bulk of the twists in this installment. There are things that I kind of see coming but I'm not too sure until it's presented and then, it changes everything. I mean everything. These twists were definitely the thing that makes this book so much better than the first. And now I'm at the point where I am so happy about this that I can no longer properly articulate it.

Ending: I loved the ending especially the final climactic scenes. There was so much packed into the small chapters that this book has and I loved that as the book was wrapping up the chapters grew smaller and smaller while still keeping the suspense until the final few pages. This does end with a cliffhanger, sort of, it's not one of the game changing cliffhangers that some sophomore titles have but it was strong enough to make me pine for the next book, and this one's technically not even out yet.

Overall, I'm giving this 5 out of 5 stars solely on the fact that I loved it better than the first. It was full of action, adventure, suspense, and not to mention romance. Don't forget it comes out this Tuesday February 5th!

  1. I cannot wait for this book! I have it pre-ordered!

  2. I actually liked this book more than the first one too. I'm sure many won't agree. But after reading Destroy Me I sort of liked Warner more. So i enjoyed Unravel Me.
