Most Wanted: Books of January 2014

So, it's finally here, 2014, and with it there are some awesome books coming out. As always this post is meant to highlight the books coming out during the month that I am most excited about, and that I don't already own and tell you guys why I want them. So without further ado let's get this show started, these books are in no particular order.

1. Promise Bound (Lies Beneath #3)

Release Date: January 7, 2014
Author: Anne Greenwood Brown
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Length: 368 pages

Calder and Lily never imagined falling in love would mean breaking apart. But ever since Lily started wearing a glass pendant that once belonged to Nadia, Calder's adoptive mother, she's been having vivid dreams of what life was like for the mermaid matriarch. In fact, she's been dreaming as if she were Nadia! And Nadia, it seems, made a promise before her death. A promise to reunite Calder's biological mother with her son. Lily knows merfolk are bound to keep their promises. Calder's not buying into it, though. He chalks up the dreams to stress. He wants Lily to focus on the future—their future, not the past. Which forces Lily to send Calder away. Calder goes, feeling rejected and more than a little tempted to revert to his hunting ways.

What both of them overlook is the present: Calder's sisters, Maris and Pavati, are fighting for control of the mermaid clan, and now that Lily and her dad have transformed into mer-creatures, both mermaids vie for daughter and father as allies. Which of the two mermaids can be trusted? Will Lily make costly mistakes, forcing her to descend to the depths of Lake Superior? And if Calder returns, will he be the same merman Lily grew to love? The stakes are high, with many lives at risk, but Calder and Lily must confront the past as well as their darkest impulses if they want a chance at being together.

Why I Want It: While I wasn't a huge fan of the first book in this series, since it reminded me a lot of Twilight, and it seemed like nothing really happened until the end, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed the second book in this series. I'm excited to read it's conclusion and was sad to discover that the publisher didn't put it up on NetGalley this time.

2. Unhinged (Splintered #2)

Release Date: January 7, 2014
Author: A.G. Howard
Publisher: Amulet Books
Length: 400 pages

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

Why I Want It: Book 2 in one of the best Alice in Wonderland reinterpretations? Sign me up! I love Splintered so much and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Plus the cover is amazing! I'm not a huge fan of the obsessive and manipulative Morpheus but the covers of these books are absolutely brilliant! Hoping Jeb's on the cover of Book 3!

3. Love Reborn (Dead Beautiful #3)

Release Date: January 7, 2014
Author: Yvonne Woon
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Length: 368 pages

Renée and Dante are dying. The soul they share cannot sustain them both, and they're quickly running out of time.

But Renée has in her possession a legendary chest said to contain the secret to eternal life-if only they could solve the clues that lie within it. With both the Liberum, a Brotherhood of the Undead, and a team of Monitors, led by Renée's own grandfather, in hot pursuit, Renée and Dante must keep the chest safe or risk having it fall into the wrong hands.

With the help of a mysterious letter-writer called only Monsieur, Renée and Dante follow a series of clues that lead them on a treacherous journey across Europe. They seek the Netherworld, a legendary chasm where souls go to be cleansed. It's their only chance at a fresh start, but with it comes a terrible choice, one they never imagined they would be forced to make.

The third novel in the acclaimed Dead Beautiful series is a haunting story of sacrifice, loyalty, and a love that can never die.

Why I Want It: While I have only read the first book in this series, I loved it so much, it has a great new spin on the concept of zombies and has a great psychology theme running through it that hooked me as soon as it was introduced.

4. The Unbound (The Archived #2)

Release Date: January 28, 2014
Author: Victoria Schwab
Publisher: Hyperion
Length: 368 pages

Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books. Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Last summer, Mackenzie Bishop, a Keeper tasked with stopping violent Histories from escaping the Archive, almost lost her life to one. Now, as she starts her junior year at Hyde School, she's struggling to get her life back. But moving on isn't easy -- not when her dreams are haunted by what happened. She knows the past is past, knows it cannot hurt her, but it feels so real, and when her nightmares begin to creep into her waking hours, she starts to wonder if she's really safe.

Meanwhile, people are vanishing without a trace, and the only thing they seem to have in common is Mackenzie. She's sure the Archive knows more than they are letting on, but before she can prove it, she becomes the prime suspect. And unless Mac can track down the real culprit, she'll lose everything, not only her role as Keeper, but her memories, and even her life. Can Mackenzie untangle the mystery before she herself unravels?

With stunning prose and a captivating mixture of action, romance, and horror, The Unbound delves into a richly imagined world where no choice is easy and love and loss feel like two sides of the same coin.

Why I Want It: So, confession time, I haven't read The Archived yet... but I'm hoping to read it soon, so that's a thing. I've heard so many amazing things about the first book in this series and the concept blows me away. I can't wait to get started on this series.

So that's it for this month, what books are you looking forward to most of all coming out this month? Leave a comment below! Happy Reading!
