Release Day Book Review: Sweet Reckoning (The Sweet Trilogy #3)

Release Date: April 29, 2014
Author: Wendy Higgins
Publisher: HarperTeen
Length: 464 pages

It’s time.

Evil is running rampant and sweet Anna Whitt is its target. Nobody knows when or how the Dukes will strike, but Anna and her Nephilim allies will do anything necessary to rid the earth of the demons and their oppressive ways.

The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. But trying to protect the ones she loves while running for her life and battling demonic forces proves to be perilous—especially as faces are changing and trust is fleeting. When the Duke of Lust sends Anna’s great love, Kaidan Rowe, to work against her, Anna must decide how much she’s prepared to risk.

In the most sensual and fast-paced installment yet, Sweet Reckoning brings all the beloved Neph together one last time to fight for their freedom.

Protagonist: Going into this final installment I had extremely high hopes for Anna's character development, and I wasn't disappointed, but I came close to it. For a large chunk of this installment, yeah Anna grows a bit here and there but for the most part she isn't at the level that I want her to be at. However, by the end of this book she takes charge and does what needs to be done which I really enjoyed. She does grow into a very strong character in this book, not that she wasn't strong in previous installments but that was a lot more mentally strong, where here it was kicking ass and taking names, though again more in the end than anywhere else.

Romance: NO MORE LOVE TRIANGLE! You have no idea how happy I am that we didn't have to deal with that love triangle anymore. The thing is, if I had read these books from the day that they came out or never looked at the covers of the books I probably would have taken the love triangle more seriously and maybe even liked it, but because Kai was on the cover of every book in this trilogy it was hard to see Kope as a viable love interest. As for the actual romance of this book, it was nice, there are some very sweet and endearing moments, and as the synopsis says, this is the most sensual installment yet, interpret that however you will. Unfortunately, now that Anna and Kai are actually dating I feel like there chemistry has diminished a bit, I loved their witty barbs traded back and forth and now their together I just feel that their chemistry is less electric and more gooey.

World-Building: While this book definitely had more heat than the other books in this series, it isn't the most fast paced, in fact I'd probably say that Sweet Peril is. This book while it has it's great moments throughout kind of just barely chugs along, leaving me pining for the prophecy to be fulfilled. The end however is just what I was waiting for. It has a great amount of action and don't even get me started on the questions that finally get answered. Trust me, while this book isn't super huge on the world-building it does have it's great moments and really works to tie up this trilogy nicely.

Predictability: Okay, so this book definitely took some great turns, I mean, wow! So starting off with the stuff I could see coming, there wasn't really that much maybe a small plot point here or there which is amazing since I had thought I would be able to figure out how this book goes down. As to what I couldn't see, still wow, I can't even fully put into words how shocked I was at some things. I will say though that there were surprises that I wasn't too happy about, but that had to happen to either protect certain characters or move the plot forward, but still, wow.

Ending: As I said above the ending had everything I was hoping for but let's start off with the climax. So honestly I was hoping for a large gigantic action scene and while I didn't get exactly what I wanted I did get exactly what I needed which was just this amazing scene with brilliant and beautiful writing and description. The aftermath was great as well and worked to really show where this world was headed after everything goes down. Now for the best part, there's an epilogue. For those who have been reading my reviews for a while know I absolutely adore epilogues and this one was just... I cried, or more accurately teared up, in a good way though. The epilogue was so sweet and so powerful and I just loved it so much.

So yes this book had some flaws but overall it was an amazing read and that ending really bumped up this rating from what was going to be a 3 star, but the ending was just that incredible. I just have to say again how glad I am that I was wrong about this series because it is incredible!

  1. You had me sold at 'more heat' ;)
I love epilogues too, especially when done right. I have this one to review on audio and I am freaking excited to get to it. Great review!
